Taking place between 1923 to 1936, the play chronicles the rise and impact of Nazism on the members of a theatre company. The varied responses to the rise of fascism by the company members and their divided political perspectives parallel the responses in German society during this era. The company leader, Hendrik Hoefgen, chooses Nazism over colleagues and ideals in order to enhance his career.
