The story of two men, Wilhelm and Menachem, in love with the same woman: the beautiful Bat-Sheva, daughter of a rabbi. Set in pre-war Munich, where Dr. Herzl wishes to hold the first Jewish congress, Bat-Sheva is a follower of Herzl and falls in love with Menachem, a Russian Jew and Zionist. Wilhelm, also wishes to court Bat-Sheva, and cannot accept her relationship with Menachem. The two men duel, and Menachem is shot but survives. Wilhelm’s determination to undermine Menachem continues through the war and beyond.
