The Hofer Cabarets

Many of Hofer’s texts, although ironically exaggerated, provide fairly accurate descriptions of how certain ghetto institutions actually functioned. He also does not shy away from addressing issues such as corruption and favoritism. He sets his tales of the peculiarities of ghetto life within familiar melodies, mostly from his beloved Vienna. His comic style may have provided German-speaking Jews with a few moments of pleasant nostalgia for the cultural forms of their pre-war lives, and his humorous look at navigating the bureaucracy of the ghetto may even have afforded them some temporary psychological relief regarding the frustrations of daily life in Terezín/Theresienstadt.
