A choir in a German synagogue in the 1930s practices the “Lecha dodi” hymn, and other synagogue songs, but in the background voices speak of the horrors to come, and a dead child’s voice disturbs the rehearsal. The choir members are worried, and wonder what to do. Two of the singers, Ziggy and Rosie, are engaged—they talk throughout the rehearsal about their hopes and wishes.
