ANNE, a 33-year-old woman in 1962, informs us that she is Anne Frank, having survived the camps, unbeknownst to the world—although her being an inmate in The Rockland Psychiatric Center leaves the audience unsure. She is visited by the spirits of others from the annex, and writes so convincingly to OTTO Frank that he comes to see her, but is unsure about her real identity. Over the course of the play, ANNE comes to terms with who she is and makes a choice that recognizes the importance of the historic Anne Frank to the world and the importance of becoming the writer she always dreamed of being.
